Amex Send & Split
In 2019 I joined American Express Digital Labs to launch its first ever peer-to-peer payments feature in the mobile app. Just a few months before I started, the CFPB released a new regulation that our General Counsel interpreted as mandating that we change the structure of our product set to launch in less than 6 months. Our very small team quickly pivoted to redefine our product’s structure, launch schedule, and marketing positions. We were challenged with leveraging the API work we already started, redesigning screens, perform concept testing, re-submit approvals to internal stakeholders and renegotiate the contract terms with PayPal & Venmo to deliver Phase 1 of the product to our Card Members. The first phase of the product enabled the ability to split purchases directly from the Amex App with any other Venmo or PayPal users.
Immediately after launching Phase 1, our team grew and we moved on to establish further feedback funnels to help inform Phase 2 and build out the full scope of the product just one year later. I co-owned the end-to-end user experience with Amex’s Mobile Product Manager and Design team and fully owned the backend implementation of the enrollment & linking (onboarding) journey.
We successfully launched Amex Send & Split in November 2020 in strategic partnership with Venmo & PayPal to all US Consumer Card Members. Eligible CMs can split any Amex charge with Venmo or PayPal users (they don’t need an Amex!) and get paid back to their Card as a statement credit. They can also send money without the 3% credit card fee to any Venmo or PayPal users using their Amex Send Account.
